Verbal Reasoning

1. Subject-Verb Agreement ✍️

Basic pero maraming nagkakamali! Ito ang foundation ng maayos na sentence.

Golden Rules:

Rule 1: Singular subject = Singular verb

✅ The suspect WAS arrested.

❌ The suspect WERE arrested.

Rule 2: Plural subject = Plural verb

✅ The officers WERE dispatched.

❌ The officers WAS dispatched.

Rule 3: "Either/or, Neither/nor" - Verb agrees with nearest subject

✅ Either the captain or the officers ARE responsible.

✅ Either the officers or the captain IS responsible.

Rule 4: Collective nouns - Usually singular

✅ The team IS ready for deployment.

Exception: When members act individually → plural

⚠️ Tricky Cases:

  • Each, Every, Everyone → Always singular
  • None → Can be singular or plural (context)
  • A number of → Plural | The number of → Singular
  • News, Mathematics, Physics → Singular (looks plural but isn't)

Past Tense

For completed actions

"The suspect FLED the scene."

Present Tense

For current facts/laws

"The law REQUIRES due process."

Future Tense

For planned actions

"The case WILL BE filed."

📋 Police Report Format (Past Tense):

"At approximately 2300H, responding officers ARRIVED at the scene. The complainant STATED that an unknown male subject ENTERED her residence through the rear window. The subject TOOK various electronic items valued at approximately PHP 50,000.00 and FLED in an unknown direction."

Dangling Modifiers

Pronoun Agreement

Parallel Structure
