Plants, Animals, Matter, Weather & Earth Materials
What We'll Learn
1. Plant Parts & Needs
Parts of a Plant and Their Jobs
| Part | Filipino | Job/Function |
|---|---|---|
| ðļ Flower | Bulaklak | Makes seeds and fruits |
| ð Leaf | Dahon | Makes food for the plant (photosynthesis) |
| ðŋ Stem | Tangkay | Holds up the plant, carries water and food |
| ðą Root | Ugat | Gets water from soil, holds plant in place |
| ð Fruit | Bunga | Protects and contains seeds |
| ð° Seed | Buto | Grows into a new plant |
What Plants Need to Live
Sunlight
For making food
Water
For growth
Air
For breathing
Soil
For nutrients
Photosynthesis: Plants use sunlight, water, and air (carbon dioxide) to make their own food! This is called photosynthesis. Leaves do this job.
2. Animal Groups
Vertebrates (With Backbone)
Mammals
Fur, milk, warm
Birds
Feathers, eggs, fly
Fish
Scales, gills, swim
Reptiles
Scales, cold, crawl
Amphibians
Wet skin, water/land
Invertebrates (Without Backbone)
Butterfly
Bee
Caterpillar
Snail
Squid
Spider
Animal Life Cycle
Butterfly Life Cycle
1. Egg
2. Larva
3. Pupa
4. Adult
3. States of Matter
Three States of Matter
Solid
Has definite shape and size
Examples: ice, rock, wood, book
Liquid
Takes shape of container, flows
Examples: water, milk, juice, oil
Gas
No shape, fills any space
Examples: air, steam, oxygen
Changing States
Solid
(Melting)
Liquid
(Evaporation)
Gas
Gas
(Condensation)
Liquid
(Freezing)
Solid
Water Example: Ice (solid) â Water (liquid) â Steam (gas)
4. Weather Patterns
Types of Weather
Sunny
Maaraw - Hot, bright sky
Cloudy
Maulap - Covered sky
Rainy
Maulan - Water falls
Stormy
Mabagyo - Strong wind, rain
The Water Cycle
- 1. Evaporation âïļ - Sun heats water, it becomes gas (vapor)
- 2. Condensation âïļ - Vapor cools and forms clouds
- 3. Precipitation ð§ïļ - Water falls as rain or snow
- 4. Collection ð§ - Water gathers in rivers, lakes, oceans
Philippine Climate: We have two main seasons - Tag-init (dry/summer) from March to May, and Tag-ulan (wet/rainy) from June to November.
5. Rocks and Soil
Types of Rocks
ð Igneous
Formed from cooled magma/lava
Examples: granite, basalt, obsidian
ðïļ Sedimentary
Formed from layers of sediment
Examples: limestone, sandstone, shale
ð Metamorphic
Changed by heat and pressure
Examples: marble, slate, quartzite
Parts of Soil
| Part | Description |
|---|---|
| Humus | Dead plants and animals (nutrients) |
| Sand | Large particles, rough, drains water fast |
| Silt | Medium particles, smooth |
| Clay | Tiny particles, sticky when wet |
6. Caring for Our Environment
The 3 Rs
Reduce
Use less stuff
Turn off lights, use less water
Reuse
Use things again
Use old containers, bring bags
Recycle
Make into new things
Paper, plastic, glass, metal
Ways to Help the Environment
- Plant trees and take care of plants ðģ
- Don't litter - throw trash in the proper bin ðïļ
- Save water - turn off the faucet ð§
- Save electricity - turn off lights ðĄ
- Take care of animals ð
- Walk or bike instead of using cars ðķ
Remember: We only have ONE Earth! Let's take care of it together. Small actions make a big difference!
