Educational Technology

Lesson 6 of 6 - Technology Integration & K-12 Curriculum

Technology in Education

Educational technology (EdTech) involves the effective use of technology to enhance teaching and learning. It's not just about using tools, but using them purposefully to achieve learning objectives.

Key Principles

  • Technology should support, not replace, good teaching
  • Focus on pedagogy first, technology second
  • Match technology to learning objectives
  • Consider access and equity

📊SAMR Model

Developed by Dr. Ruben Puentedura, SAMR describes four levels of technology integration from simple substitution to transformative use.

ENHANCEMENT

S - Substitution

Technology acts as direct substitute with no functional change

Example: Typing a paper instead of handwriting

A - Augmentation

Technology acts as substitute with functional improvement

Example: Using spell-check and grammar tools in word processor

TRANSFORMATION

M - Modification

Technology allows significant task redesign

Example: Students collaborate on Google Docs in real-time

R - Redefinition

Technology allows creation of new tasks previously impossible

Example: Students create and publish a multimedia website reaching global audience

Key Point: Higher levels (M, R) are not always better. The goal is to match technology use to learning objectives.

🔄TPACK Framework

Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) describes the knowledge teachers need to effectively integrate technology into their teaching.

TK

Technological Knowledge

Understanding how to use technology tools

PK

Pedagogical Knowledge

Understanding how to teach effectively

CK

Content Knowledge

Understanding the subject matter

TPK

Technological Pedagogical Knowledge

Using technology to support teaching methods

TCK

Technological Content Knowledge

Using technology specific to content area

TPACK

Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge

The intersection of all three - knowing how to use technology to teach specific content effectively
